Early in my link building career, I was asked to find related link partners for my clients through email solicitations. Who knew that sending out "I came across your site" emails, would be so fun. I think it's about as fun as cutting your wrists and doing push ups in saltwater.
All painful analogies aside, I've found easier ways to establish link partnerships. I have also found many examples of what NOT to do when running a link building campaign. I receive dozens of link exchange email requests every month. Out of those dozens of emails, only five percent appear to be from a sender that has visited my site. This is very strange considering that all of the senders think I have a "great website". As an experienced link builder, I've learned that an email link exchange request MUST be personalized to have any chance of being considered at all, let alone accepted. I don't know about your workday, but I prefer not to spend mine looking through software generated link requests sent to me because my clients made the mistake of giving their email address to the wrong website. Unfortunately, part of my job is to weed through my clients' link exchange request emails and to respond to the few legitimate requests I receive. So for me, reading spam emails is unavoidable. I can remember a wedding gown company asking to exchange links with one of my clients who sold custom signs and stickers. Earth to Matilda... what bride puts stickers on her wedding dress? It's spammers like this that have ruined email as a viable tool for establishing link partnerships. To achieve any measure of success in finding related link partners nowadays, you have to be willing to adjust your link building strategies. Sure, emails are quick and easy but without results, they're just a big waste of time. Instead, try contacting link exchange candidates directly by picking up the phone. This strategy requires more effort on your part, but personal contact with potential link partners can yield better and faster results. It can also lead to industry networking opportunities that you haven't even considered. Another link building strategy you might try is to offer a free product, service or newsworthy articles on your site that webmasters can't resist telling their visitors about. Online press releases and blogs are a great way to spread the word about your new and exciting content and entice others to link to your site. So instead of sending countless emails out into cyberspace and vainly hoping for a reply other than " undeliverable address", find a contact number and make a phone call or put on your creativity hat and come up with unique and useful content for your site that inspires people to link to you. Conclusion Don't spend your time doing push-ups in salt water by clinging to the outdated strategy of link exchange request emails. Join the evolution of link building. You'll be glad you did.
